Military and Medical Fiction for Great Storytelling

Keith Hummel MD attended the U.S. Navy’s flight surgery training program at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute (NAMI) at NAS Pensacola, where he completed primary flight training and specialized instruction in flight-related medicine. Following the NAMI program he served as a carrier-based flight surgeon. He is an emergency medicine physician with over 60,000 hours in the emergency department. 

Keith’s pursuits include co-driving on the ARA Rally racing circuit. He’s completed an Army on driving military tanks, and he’s a fan of off-the-beaten-path foreign travel. He restored an historic estate in Tidewater Virginia and was instrumental in having it placed on the state and national registries of historic places while establishing a commercial vineyard and winery on the same property. 

Keith is conversational in the German language and has restored and maintained a collection of vintage Porsches, Mercedes, and BMWs. He plays the violin and twice won the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Irish Slow Air Competition in New York. Hummel co-founded a small commuter airline in the Caribbean, has done graduate studies in Ancient History and Classical Studies, and has brushed noses with the CIA. 

Keith has an MFA in Creative Writing/Fiction, a graduate certificate in Developmental Editing from the University of Chicago, and writes Doctor Fiction, (doctorfiction.tumblr.com) where he assists writers in the effective use of medical and trauma situations in their fiction endeavors. He is the medical director for a major defense contractor and lives on a hilltop farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley with his family and his beloved Airedale, Henry.
